What's on the list
Shelter and sleep. A tent, plus a sleeping bag and sleeping pad for each person.
Kitchen and water. A camp stove with fuel, a cookset with utensils, a water filter and a water bottle each.
Light and comfort. A headlamp and a camp chair for each person.
Layers. Tops, bottoms, underwear and socks for three days, plus a light jacket, warm coat, rain jacket, sun hat, warm hat and scarf each. Hiking shoes, walking shoes and sandals.
Health and toiletries. A mini first-aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, pain reliever, prescriptions and the basics.
Trim it before you print
The list is built from a general catalog, so some lines won't fit a drive-in campsite. Passports, visas, boarding passes and the luggage lock stay off unless you tick "Flying or crossing a border". Remove anything else you don't need, like lodging confirmations. Add what's specific to your site, like a permit, firewood if it's allowed, or a cooler.
Before you go
- Check the campground's rules on fires, food storage and wildlife.
- Tell someone your plans. The US National Park Service says to "tell someone where you're going and when to expect you back."
- Check the NPS Ten Essentials if you plan to hike from camp: navigation, sun protection, extra clothing, a light source (the NPS recommends a headlamp, with extra batteries), first aid, fire, a repair kit and tools, extra food, water and water treatment, and emergency shelter.
